Sustainability

What does Sustainability mean to us?

At Yellow Point Cranberries, sustainability is about making the right choices.  Choosing safe and sound growing practices, selecting the best processing and packaging materials, stewarding the land, honouring the environment, and supporting our community and family.  We believe that these are the best choices for our future.

We regularly monitor and test our soil, water and plants for disease and pests, through careful analysis, we can choose the best plan for growing a strong healthy crop.  We aim for a holistic approach in order to minimize the use of commercial pesticides and fertilizers, and choose the best, safest, and most environmentally sound products we can.  Choices may include cultural practices (such as sanding or mulching a field with sawdust), natural predation (parasitic nematodes), low risk and low rate chemical application, organic nutrient- foliar application, mineral fertilizers and water management.

At our farm processing and packaging facility, we make daily choices to buy recycled and recyclable matereials and packaging whenever possible.  We choose to support local farms, producers and industry.  We have selected cost effective transportation for products on and off the farm, which helps to reduce fuel and emissions.

At Yellow Point Cranberries we know the choices we make today, will affect tomorrow.  We strongly believe in keeping our farm healthy and productive, not only for the fruit we grow, but also for the vegetation, wildlife and community surrounding us.  We continue to develop managed buffers by planting trees and native species around our fields.  Numerous bird houses, bee boxes and raptor perches have been set up to enhance the populations of native pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. We chose to use electric motors on irrigation pumps over diesel engines to reduce our direct emissions, and maintain a quiet operation.

Yellow Point Cranberries is a Family Farm Business.  The sustainability of the business is one of the most challenging aspects of the farm.  This farm could not be possible without the help and support from our family, friends and neighbours. The choices we make must allow us to grow and nurture our farm and family. We want to provide a safe, healthy and profitable environment to raise our family, and we want to help promote a sustainable future for the farming community.
